How to Access NDIS Early Childhood Supports for Your Child

Every parent wants to give their child the best possible start in life. But when you notice delays in your child’s speech, movement, learning, or behaviour, it’s natural to feel uncertain about what to do next.

With the right help at the right time, a child can overcome developmental concerns. It’s all possible with NDIS Early Childhood Support.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) offers specialised support for children younger than 9, making it easier for families to access early intervention services.

Without needing a formal diagnosis straight away.

Whether you’re just starting to notice signs or already exploring your options, this guide helps you take confident next steps for your child’s future.

What Is NDIS Early Childhood Support?

The Early Childhood Intervention focuses on getting children and their families the right support as early as possible. Early intervention can make a big difference in a child’s development, confidence, and future learning.

Some of the supports available include:

  • Therapies such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, or physiotherapy

  • Assistive technology to support communication or mobility

  • Behavioural and emotional support

  • Parent coaching and family support, so you can better understand and respond to your child’s needs

  • Encourage the child to do activities they need to do on their own.

  • Short-term early intervention programs, even before applying for a full NDIS plan

The goal here is to work closely with your family, strengthen your child’s skills, and help them participate in everyday life.

At Nascare Disability Support Services, we help parents understand this crucial support and how to access it. Connect with our team to know more.

NDIS Early Childhood Support

Who Is Eligible for Early Childhood Supports?

One of the biggest advantages of the Early Childhood Support is that it allows families to access support sooner, without needing to wait for medical approval or paperwork.

Eligibility criteria include that the child must show the developmental signs (Signs shared below). He/she must be a citizen of Australia and living in Australia.

The support is helpful during the critical early years when intervention can have the most impact on the child’s life.

Here is how it works by age group:

Children aged 0–5 years

  • Can access support directly through a local Early Childhood Partner (ECP).

  • You don’t need to apply for the NDIS straight away. ECPs can offer short-term early intervention based on your child’s needs.

  • If longer-term support is required, the ECP will guide you through the NDIS application process.

Children aged 6–8 years

  • Still supported under the Early Childhood Approach.

  • May need to go through the NDIS access process sooner.

  • An Early Childhood Partner can still help coordinate assessments, planning, and connections to services.

Children aged above 9 years

NDIS also support children over 9 years of age with the Early Childhood Approach. Local area coordinator partner, work with you and understand your needs. They connect you with a mainstream community service provider.

Signs of Developmental Delay In Children

If you observe the following signs in your child, it highly indicates that they need intervention support:

Table showing difference between childhood support

In Babies and Toddlers (0–3 years):

  • Limited eye contact or smiling

  • Delayed crawling, walking, or sitting

  • Little or no babbling or speech

  • Difficulty responding to sounds or their name

In Preschoolers (3–5 years):

  • Trouble speaking in clear sentences

  • Struggles with coordination or motor skills

  • Difficulty playing or interacting with other children

  • Repetitive behaviours or intense interests

  • Challenges with remembering things, like daily routines or simple instructions

If you notice these signs, it’s important to seek early support before it’s too late.

How to Access NDIS Early Childhood Supports for Your Child

1. Recognise the Signs and Talk to a Professional

Your child shows signs of delay in speech, movement, or social interaction. Speak with a GP (General Practitioner), early educator, or child health nurse. You don’t need a formal diagnosis to begin exploring support options.

2. Contact Your Local Early Childhood Partner (ECP)

You can self-refer by contacting your nearest Early Childhood Partner. They’ll help assess your child’s needs and connect you to early intervention services personalised to your situation.

3. Receive Early Supports (Even Without an NDIS Plan)

Many children can start with short-term supports like speech or occupational therapy, even without a formal NDIS plan. These early services aim to reduce developmental delays and support everyday learning and participation.

4. Apply for the NDIS (If Required)

If your child needs longer-term or ongoing support, your ECP will guide you through the NDIS application process. After the process, we make sure your child gets essential support that significantly reduces the developmental delays.
